Can’t Pay Child Support?
You know it’s a tough economy when celebrities are also having a hard time making child support payments. And, no, we’re not talking about Bobby Brown. In May, Anne Heche went to court to suspend her child support payments due to loss of work. Luckily for her, the judge granted a temporary suspension of payments but she will also have to provide the court with updated financial records.
Unfortunately things don’t always work out so smoothly when one spouse claims no money to pay. Recently, a Central Florida man was ordered to serve time in jail and pay $1,000 a month until a total of $700,000 in child support had been paid to his former wife. Robert Abraham claims he wasn’t able to make the payments due to either being in jail or having no money. However, since during this time he was able to make other large purchases, the court found in favor of his former wife.
So, what can you do if you lose your job or cannot make your child support payments for some reason? First of all, have the court modify your agreement. Whether it is permanent or temporary, it will certainly help your situation. Also, you need to make arrangements quickly before you get too far behind on your payments. Anne Heche may be a two-timer but she did the right thing by notifying the court as soon as she knew she would be unable to continue the current schedule for child support. By keeping everyone involved up to date on your financial situation, you should be able to find the solution to best fit your needs.
