So you think you want a divorce?

If you are ready to call a lawyer and start divorce proceedings, there a few things you should do to help the process begin as smoothly as possible. Before you call an attorney, you should be aware of important information they will need to begin your case.

As soon as possible, begin compiling a list of all your accounts (shared and solo) and make copies of retirement, investment, credit card and bank statements to bring to your first meeting. Your lawyer will begin compiling your assets and liabilities to gain a better perspective on what you own, what you owe, your monthly bills, etc. You will also want to gather your tax returns. If you have direct deposits into a shared bank account, you will want to stop those immediately.

It’s also important to establish your own credit. Most likely you have shared bank accounts and credit cards with your spouse. However, for your new independent future, you will need to establish your credit solo.

Although this an extremely difficult time for everyone involved, remember an attorney is there to provide objectivity and perspective to the situation. Also, remember the decisions you make now could affect you (or possibly your children) for many years to come. Because this is such an emotional time in your life choices may not always seem so clear, that’s why it’s important to have an attorney who is looking out for your interests.
