Update On Matos Case
Information has been disclosed through letters filed with the court that concern the couple’s six year old child. According to a letter sent to the court, McGreevey’s boyfriend and wealthy financier, Mark O’Donnell, had offered to pay for the child’s private school education. But, according the AP, McGreevey’s attorney has stated Matos is refusing the offer. The judge has asked matters in the case involving the child to be sealed and had harsh words for Matos and McGreevey concerning their parenting of this child.
It’s important to remember that a step-parent has no legal obligation to support the child of their spouse. It can be frustrating for parents when an ex-spouse marries a person of great financial means because even though married to the parent, that person has no obligation to support the child. However, if the step-parent adopts the child, they become legally obligated to support it, even if they eventually divorce the biological parent.
